HEIGH-HO!
The Ladies sigh, they know not why,
'Tis not this pain or woe—
For whether glad, or whether sad,
They always cry Heigh-ho!
Poor men of schools and grammar rules
Oft try its sense to show:
But none alive could yet derive
The meaning of Heigh-ho!
The sly coquette fain would meet her swain
Nor let her parent know:
Within this car, that he may hear,
Now whisper him Heigh-ho!
Sometimes distress (as many guess)
Oft times will bellow;
But oh the Miss in hours of bliss
Will utter an Heigh-ho!
As joy o'er much is often sick,
Makes our eyes o'erflow
Our eyes with joyful words,
An Heigh-ho!
The married pair, devoid of care,
(While mutual transports glow)
With pleasure speak, or words are weak
By echoing Heigh-ho
Heigh ho means a word of grief
Or joys that once were woe
When lacking aught, the secret thought
Is hinted by Heigh-ho!
