Full Text

Keep up your spirits by good thoughts. Enjoy the pleasant company of your best friends, but in all enjoyment, be Temperate. Learn the art to be preferred before all others, of being happy when alone--which consists in the encouragement of good hopes and rational pursuits-in leading an industrious life, and in converse with the world, be ever careful for the sake of peace, to speak ill of no one, to treat your enemy with civility, and shut your ears against evil reports of all kinds.

Virtue is the foundation of honor and esteem, and the source of all beauty, order and happiness in nature. It is what confers value on all the other endowments and qualities of a reasonable being, to which they ought to be absolutely subservient; and without which, the more eminent they are, the more hideous deformities, and the greater curses, they become.
