As the country progresses on its way toward normalcy it becomes more and more evident that work and economy are the two things which will land us safely. Thousands of men are idle because they think, or want to think, that conditions are just as they were two years ago-that they should have high wages and short hours.
Also, manufacturers and jobbers are trying to hold the price of their wares up as near the war figures as possible.
On the other hand, the products of the farm have dropped back to the pre-war figure, and in some cases below, putting the farmer and the people who do business directly with the farmer, out of the market, to a great extent, so far as luxuries are concerned and, of course, effecting materially the conditions in the agricultural community. As long as this condition maintains there can be no general prosperity. A part of the people cannot receive twice what they earn and another body of citizens receive less than their product costs to produce, and either prosper. Wages and prices of manufactured articles must get to somewhere near level with the price of the farm products before industrial and commercial peace and prosperity will exist.
