Applications for membership in the Tourist Motor club are coming in a steady stream, according to the officials of the club. They are, however, surprised to find that a number of the applicants are Caucasian. To date 25 such requests for membership have been received.
The unique travel accident policy hospitalization plan and other protective features of the tourist motor club are believed to be responsible for the rush for membership.
"This is not a Jim Crow club," said Walter Lowe, president of the Motor club, "we welcome any one of whatever clime or race who wishes to avail himself of our services and protection. The club's main objective is to take the risks out of motoring and to make traveling a pleasant and enduring experience," President Lowe declared.
One of the white applicants is a member of the faculty of the University of Kansas. He appended a note to his application blank saying: "I find the offers of protection and services in your motor club far more satisfactory and adequate than those of the club in which I hold my membership. Consequently, as of this date, I am canceling my membership in the United Motor club in order to join your organization."
Forty-seven governors and more than 500 mayors and police chiefs have pledged their cooperation with the members of the Tourist Motor club. Lowe believes that no other club of its kind can boast of such endorsements.
The club membership carries with it bail bonds, ten weeks hospital plan, and a number of unusual features designed to assure comfort to its members.
