What is this article about?
The annual Ox Roast in West Jefferson experienced ideal weather until rain on Labor Day evening, limiting sandwich sales to 7,662 but selling remaining roast on-site. Highlights included crowning the Ox Roast Queen, performances by Willie Thall and The Four Trail Hands, and awarding over $2,000 in prizes like an air conditioner and color TV. Estimates suggest it raised more than previous years.

After perfect weather for the majority of the program, rain started falling late Labor Day to dampen the final evening. The rain held the sale of the ox-roast sandwiches to 7,662, but the remaining roast was sold by the piece to those present.
The crowning of the Ox Roast Queen marked the climax of the first day, and the main features of the Sunday Program were three shows by Willie Thall, along with The Four Trail Hands. The third day was climaxed with the serving of the sandwiches and the awarding of more than $2,000 worth of major prizes, including an air conditioner, a color television set, and several other major appliances and items.
No accurate recapitulation of the amount raised through the three day affair were available Tuesday morning, but estimates indicated that the program was well ahead of most of the other six which have marked the end of summer for the West Jefferson Community.
