"I am very sorry that public Affairs appear with such a gloomy Aspect with you. I heartily wish every Thing may be settled to the mutual Satisfaction of both Parties, and that Matters may not be carried to greater Extremities. Our Provincial Congress are met this Day; it is not certain that they will chuse the same Delegates; many People are very much dissatisfied that Rice should be excepted in the non-Exportation Agreement at the last Congress, and let who will be chosen they will have positive Instructions to put a Stop to the Exportation of that Article in September, when the non-exportation Agreement takes Place; this no Doubt will be looked upon as a noble Sacrifice of the Planters of this Province, which it certainly is; they do this in order that there should not be the least Cause of Jealousy given to the Northern Colonies. I sincerely Wish every Colony on the Continent may be as firm and steady as South-Carolina, who cheerfully give up more than any Province on the Continent."
