Democratic County Convention Met In Snow Hill To Elect Delegates To The Congressional Convention.
Worcester County Democrats met in the Court House here on Tuesday to elect delegates to the Ocean City convention. Hon. John P. Moore, chairman of the county central committee, called the convention to order and named Mr. J. Shiles Crockett as temporary chairman of the convention, with Mr. E. Clark Fontaine as secretary.
The committee on credentials reported the following gentlemen as regularly accredited delegates:
First District—J. Shiles Crockett, E. Clark Fontaine, Calvin H. Long, J. Harry Young, Harrison P. Merrill.
Second District—William F. Johnson, Oliver D. Collins, John L. Robins, Walter T. Mason, Elmer D. Bailey.
Third District—Henry D. Adams, Harry E. Palmer, Gordon L. Burbage, Christopher C. Ludlum, Henry E. Davis.
Fourth District—Taylor Dennis, F. E. Collins.
Fifth District—Timothy Rayne, Stephen Records.
Sixth District—J. E. Dickerson, Samuel E. Shockley.
Seventh District—James K. P. West, Samuel S. Atkinson, John H. Shockley, Thomas R. Corbin.
Eighth District—David W. Webb, Thomas B. Cottman, James W. Pruitt, C. W. Jones, L. W. Onley.
Ninth District—John D. Henry, W. Elkton Boston, Thomas Y. Franklin, George B. Givans, Calvin B. Taylor.
The committee on resolutions then reported through its chairman, Mr. William F. Johnson, as follows:
The Democratic party of Worcester County in convention assembled, on this the 10th day of July, 1906, renews its former declarations of faith in the grand old party of Jefferson and Jackson, and declares its opposition to the system of government which fosters Trusts and other combinations detrimental to the general welfare and prosperity of the people. We commend and endorse the services of Honorable Thomas A. Smith, as our Representative in Congress. He has shown himself to be a faithful servant of the people, attentive to his duties as a Congressman, courteous and obliging, and awake to the best interests of his State and the First Congressional District. Therefore be it
Resolved, That the delegates elected here to-day to represent Worcester County in the Ocean City convention are instructed to vote as a unit for the nomination of Honorable Thomas A. Smith to succeed himself as Representative in Congress for the First Congressional District of Maryland, and to vote as a unit on all other matters before the convention.
The following gentlemen were then elected delegates to the Congressional convention:
J. Shiles Crockett, E. Clark Fontaine, George S. Payne, Robley D. Jones, William F. Johnson, W. Lee Carey, Archer C. Holloway, Dr. R. P. Collins, Elijah J. Shockley, James K. P. West, E. W. McMaster, Frank Houston, C. W. Jones, L. L. Dirickson, Jr., Reese C. Peters, Thomas J. Whaley.
The convention was a harmonious one from start to finish, not a ripple of discord appearing to disturb the serenity of the occasion. One thing was forcibly manifest and that was the unanimous desire of the Democrats of Worcester County to elect a Democratic Congressman, this year above all others, because nearly every Democrat who keeps up with public affairs realizes that the Republicans have so trampled upon the people's rights that they will unquestionably be dethroned at the coming election, and the next House of Representatives will be Democratic. The best interests of the nation demands this change.
