Levees Still Holding Below Border: Safety Crews Are Trying To Stop Break
SAN DIEGO, Calif., June 28.-The Colorado river has topped the Volcano Lake levee at three points above the Tortuoso waste at the eastern end of the levee late today, but the levee was still holding, according to word received here. The Volcano lake levee is the last bulwark between the flood waters of the Colorado river, now believed to have passed their peak, and the cotton lands of the lower Imperial valley.
General Manager F. N. Cronholm, talking from the levee today, said there was almost no free board for stretches of 100 yards or more at many points, and at one point, where a break threatened last night, the water was held back by sand bags.
The Southern Pacific railroad company, whose Lower California line would be endangered if the levee gave way, came to the rescue late yesterday and put men and material on the job to work with the irrigation district forces in an effort to prevent further damage.
All of the settlers between the Volcano lake levee and the head of New river have been moved out and have taken most of their movable property and livestock with them. For this reason loss of life in the event of a break is not anticipated.
The Saize levee, which lies between the Ockerson and the Volcano, is submerged. Engineers said it was probably so weakened by saturation and pressure as to be valueless for defense. The Ockerson levee was reported to be safe.
