Gets $1 in Land Case

Andrew Baluch, now serving a 12-year term in the State penitentiary for second degree murder, was awarded $1 damages by a jury at Oakland last Thursday. Baluch acted as his own attorney in the condemnation case.

The State Roads Commission had instituted the proceedings over a small piece of property in front of a tavern owned by Baluch and his wife. The damages were awarded after the jury had viewed the site a few hundred feet from the Pennsylvania state line on route 40.

Baluch, who was accompanied here by a penitentiary guard, was convicted by a Garrett county jury in March, 1949, of second degree murder in the shooting of Menno Durst, of near Grantsville.
