Yesterday afternoon, between three and four o'clock, a fire broke out in that part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Machine Shop, fronting on the river. The wind was high and the flames were soon beyond control. The fire originated in the sandhouse, from the furnace used in drying sand, and from that communicated to the oil house where it received such an impetus that water had no affect on the flames. The Machine Shop, including passenger engine house, blacksmith shop, pattern shop, carpenter shop, store house, turning shop, oil house, &c., &c., were entirely consumed. The most serious part of the loss, however, consisted in the total destruction of three locomotives 95, 96, and 155-and the scorching of the 89 and 207, the former being considerably injured. Every possible exertion was made to extinguish the flames, but the fire spread so rapidly that all efforts proved unavailing. The different fire companies were on the ground, and did all in their power to stay the progress of the flames. The loss is a very serious one-not only to the Railroad company, in the amount of property destroyed, but to the men employed in the establishment, who will, of course, for the present, be thrown out of employment. Various estimates have been made of the loss, but there is no telling its extent at this time-some place it at $100,000, while others put it down at a much larger figure.
