Full Text

Prairie fires have lately prevailed to a great extent in Nebraska, and much property has been destroyed by them. A thrilling story is told of a man who was overtaken by the flames when but a few rods from his home, but who was unable to outrun the element, and was burned to death—his body being reduced almost to a cinder. Two sons of the deceased, who were with him in the field, had a narrow escape from meeting the same fate, and only saved themselves by jumping into a small pond of water. None, except those who have seen a prairie on fire, can imagine the terrible grandeur of the sight, and the rapidity with which the flames rush along.
