Excursion on the White Mountains.-Capt. PARTRIDGE and Professor MARSH, accompanied by eight of the students at the Norwich seminary, two students of Dartmouth and one from Columbia college, N. Y. left Norwich on the 23d August, on foot, and were absent eight days, during which they marched 180 miles, and encamped one night on the highest land of New-England. In this excursion, they were joined by Professor Dana, of the Dartmouth Medical Institution, Dr. Norris, of the U. S. navy, and other gentlemen, so that the party on the mountain amounted in the whole to 28. The object of Capt. P. in making this excursion, during the vacation of his seminary, was to inure his pupils to those hardships, the practice of which may be necessary in after life; to teach them that the summit of fame is not to be attained, but at the expense of perseverance and labour, as well as to make those observations which shall ascertain the correct altitude of these high grounds.
Capt. P. went upon these mountains in 1816, and we believe was the first to ascertain that their height had been overrated.
