Alexandria, Virginia

What is this article about?

Northern U.S. papers reprint a Bermuda Royal Gazette account of the naval engagement between the USS President and HMS Little Belt, likely from Capt. Bingham. The editor declines full publication, citing Commodore Rodgers's letter, and notes British claims of Little Belt hailing first, President catching fire, and Rodgers's apology for engaging a weaker foe. Awaits official British statement; later receives Bingham's account.

Full Text

Several of the northern papers contain an account (from the Bermuda Royal Gazette) of the affair between the President and Little Belt. It is said to come, probably, from Capt. Bingham himself; but as his name is not affixed to it, we decline publishing it: We have already given one British account, which is in many respects conformable to the present. We are unwilling to give place to every unofficial statement in opposition to Commodore Rodgers's letter. The account in question asserts, that the Little Belt hailed first; that after an action of three quarters of an hour, the President was discovered to be on fire, &c. Great stress is laid upon one circumstance which is mentioned, viz: that after the action, Commodore Rodgers sent a message on board the Little Belt, with an apology, that had he known the force was so inferior he would not have fired. As all these points are either contradicted or passed over by the Commodore, we must suspend an opinion at least until an official statement of the affair shall be published by the British government.--Since writing the above, we have received Capt. Bingham's statement, to which we refer.
