"Success' was the topic of Mrs. Crystal Burgess Marmon's Business Career Day speech. One hundred and twenty-two persons attended the Pragmateia-Urban League's Business Career Day at Maxfield School, Saturday, October 1.
The native St. Paulite, now director of Planning and Methods for Johnson Publishing Co., Chicago, Publisher of Ebony, Jet and Tan Magazines, outlined for the audience, four steps to success: (1) select realistic goals; (2) work hard: (3) continue your education and: (4) maintain a peace of mind.
Mrs. Marmon went on to cite many examples of self-containment that eventually resulted in rewarding achievement.
She also said that a greater effort by the practitioner to reach youngsters should be exerted, in order to keep the student aware of new job opportunities.
Mrs. Jerry Robins and Mrs. Kneely Williams, co-chairmen of the event, presided at the sessions. Maxfield School was the scene of the Third Annual Career Day. The day began with welcome statements by Mrs. Victor Calloway, President, Pragmateia Sorority, and Mr. Ernest C. Cooper, Executive Director. St. Paul Urban League.
Mrs, Benita McHie. Scholarship Chairman, presented the Scholarship Award to Miss Gloria Chandler.
Each of the three Workshops held, were quite informative. Mrs. Audrey Briggs, Consultant for the Workshop on the administrative secretarial field, in pointing up the growth of the field, said that in 1870. the demand for Administrative Secretaries was 300,000 and today, there is a need of six million five hundred thousand (6,500,000).
George Holland, Consultant in Federal Civil Service Occupations, pointed up the benefits of Civil Service Employment:
a. Good working hours
b. Outstanding life insurance plan
c. Group health plan
d. Good retirement plan, possibly the best of all civil services
e. Opportunities for promotion
f. Fair employment policy,
Miss Carol Paar. Consultant for the Legal Secretarial Workshop pin-pointed the specific duties of the Legal Secretary: (1) maintain an adequate record system; (2) bookkeeping (3) reminders appointments, luncheons, etc. (4) various forms of legal work i.e.- drawing up papers, summons, collection fees, etc. (5) keep records of all calls (6) keep diary of where attorney is to be and what he is to do, etc. (7) know legal forms (8) take dictation and: (9) know legal terms.
Miss Kay Carries, Director of Special Events, Emporium and Mrs. Byron Brown, Emporium, presented the crowd of 122 people with a Style Show of fall and winter fashions.
Reverend Kneely Williams, gave the invocation. Also, many new business machines were demonstrated.
The Pragmateia Sorority is a group of professional and business women and the St. Paul Urban League is a member agency of the Greater St. Paul Community Chest and Council, Inc.
