Full Text

The Chicago Times deplores the demoralization of the Democratic party of Iowa. It has no patience with the fossilized "old hunkers" who stand by the time-honored creed of the party. It berates them for still voting for "old Hickory," and assures them "that General Jackson cannot be elected Governor of Iowa at the fall election."

The Democracy of our State will feel grateful for the interest manifested by the great anti-war organ of the Northwest, in their welfare, and for the effort it makes to inform them on political topics. Whether it will succeed in inducing them to abandon the hope of electing General Jackson, time will show.

The Times advises them to "go in" for negro suffrage and free whisky, and insures their triumph by an overwhelming majority. It says to the Democracy of Iowa, in summing up its exhortation,

"Let them boldly take the initiative in conferring suffrage impartially. Let them oppose Maine-lawism, and all the other fanatical and proscriptive doctrines of their opponents."

The advice may be good in the abstract, but it comes rather late in the day. The democracy can't take the "initiative" on the suffrage question, either "boldly or otherwise," for the Republicans did that two years ago, against the most bitter opposition of the Democracy. The most the Democracy, therefore, can do in that direction is to get up and ride behind the Republican party, which holds the reins. The other steed is rather an unmanageable mustang, and is just as likely to kick the brains out of the party as any other way.
