4-H Club Contest
ATHENS, Ga., - Amos Jones, Jr., of Bibb County, is state winner in the Georgia Negro 4-H garden contest this year, according to announcement Saturday by Alexander Hurse, state leader. He wins $15 second prize of $10 goes to J. P. Jones, of Morgan, while Willie Batey, of Chatham; Moses Wilson of Brooks and Robert Lee Adams of Jenkins, won successive places.
Sixth through tenth place winners, who will receive $2.50 each, are Herbert Lee Adams, of Brooks; Eugene Walton, of Glynn; Eliyard Woodruff, of Glynn; Robert Mobley, of Burke, and Joseph Beard, of Peach-Houston.
Jones, state winner, is 12 years old and has been a 4-H'er for three years. He grew 12 vegetables, got a total yield of 2904 from his garden project, sold $100 worth of vegetables and his family used about $47 worth of vegetables preparing the family's meals.
Approximately 400 4-H Club boys, representing 28 counties, participated in the garden contest this year.
