When Citizen Genet was appointed the minister of the French Government to the United States, Mr. Morris wrote to General Washington an account of the man, and the manner in which he won favour with his employers. "He chose America," says Morris, "as being the best harbour during the storm, and if my informant be right, he will not put to sea again until it is fair weather." This prediction was verified. The citizen remained in the harbor, after having been recalled for attempting to usurp the government of our republic and insulting the Father of our country. The recent interchange of caresses between him and the successor of Washington, and his formal entry into the lists as the champion of Mr. Van Buren, are matters of sufficient notoriety. In 1793, Morris wrote to Mr. Jefferson as Secretary of State—"M. Genet took out with him three hundred blank commissions, which he is to distribute to such as will fit out cruisers in our ports, to prey on the British commerce. I am convinced that few of my countrymen will be so lost to all moral sense, as to embark in a game so abominable, where the murder of their fellow-creatures enters as a leading chance."—Nat. Gaz.
