Full Text

Interlude in the performance of Kotzebue's Count of Burgendorf, is very graphically sketched by the Charleston Mercury, which gives an elaborate critique on the merits of the distinguished tragedy.

"By the way, we had a curious interlude to our tragedy, which might go far to settle the long agitated controversy as to the relative effect of the grotesque upon the human mind, when brought in close juxtaposition with the pathetic. In the midst of the last scene, when all eyes were fixed upon the murdered one bending before the victorious race? a little dusty, meagre, long handed pig, trotted into the midst of the solemn group. Whether he came to offer good or ill luck to the maiden, taking time by the forelock, we know not; but the moment after, the renowned Valerius Publicola ped against a dose of correction arms, and was ejected from the stage, quitted to him behind the scenes."
