Recovery of the Remains of the Engineer--Still Working to Repair the Break.
The accident near Aurora on Saturday morning was fully recorded in Sunday's GLOBE. The body of the unfortunate engineer, Fuller Musser, was partially recovered early Sunday morning, the legs having to be cut off to secure the remains. Later in the day the remaining fragments were secured and the body removed to Austin, where he resided. The accident was a most singular one and of such a character as to seem to prevent its being avoided. It occurred upon an embankment thirty or forty feet high, having a stone culvert at its base. There is no stream to pass through the culvert, but as the embankment is built across a ravine the culvert seems to have been put in to allow surface water to escape. The storm of Friday night seems to have precipitated an immense volume of water at the point where the accident occurred, and the force of it washed out the embankment over the culvert. It is apparent that the rails and ties were simply hanging suspended in the air when the ill-fated engine came to the spot. The engine went down some sixteen feet right side up and without scarcely moving from the rails. The engineer was killed by the tender doubling over like a pocket-knife upon the engine. A large wrecking force is at work and trains will probably be able to cross the break to-morrow. In the meantime passengers, mails and express are transferred around the break. The train due here Saturday night did not arrive until 3:30 p. m. Sunday. Trains will be substantially on time to-day. The dead engineer was a member of the Locomotive engineers, the Odd Fellows and the Workmen societies, and leaves his family nearly $6,000 life insurance from these sources.
