Social Security

During the present week the machinery of the Social Security
begins to function and questionnaires are being mailed to
firms in every branch of industry. Following these question-
aires which seek to learn the names and addresses of every em-
ployee there will be mailed to each employee listed another ques-
tionnaire, thus touching through the mails every potential re-
cipient of the benefits of this invaluable program.

Because many of our group will be directly concerned, we
urge that everyone become advised about the Social Security
Act. Enacted in August, 1935, its administration to-date has
been directed almost exclusively to federal aid for states in the
setting up of unemployment insurance and caring for the
needy aged. The part that during long plan is the establishment
of pension amounts to 20 million workers. This will be
the only section of the law directly administered by the federal
government. It takes effect January 1.

The amount of the monthly pension will depend on all em-
ployees earnings from January 1, 1937; and the date with birth-
day. Should a person retire at age 65 and then return to work
from time to time, the pension check will be held up for each
month in which he receives wages in an employment covered
by law.

Among the few workers obtained from in this law are persons and
all others who work in the cultural, state or local governments,
as well as those railroad men, people trade over seas, hip.
domestic servants, nail fire, seamen, wild men
and employees of cashualties, education, philanthropic or re-
ligious institutions.

In the main army to who have to allege provisions for
to must the plan particular significance. We urge that
such workers all do to an hunt a early as possible.
