"Five of the Piers of Charles-River Bridge were carried away last Saturday night. The outer one was raised in the afternoon, and not being driven into the ground, was by the violence of the weather, put into motion, which was communicated to four others with which it was slightly connected: The whole were erected last week; and the suddenness of the storm prevented their being secured with string-pieces, which would have effectually prevented the accident. I send this state of facts to prevent misrepresentations, which might give more pain than pleasure. The remainder of the Bridge stands immoveable; and the only injury is a week's delay, as the Piers are not lost."
