Accounts from Santa Martha state, that a proclamation had been issued at that place directing all British subjects to leave it in the course of fifteen days from the 12th of this month. This measure was considered a most extraordinary one, after the assistance rendered Spain by Great Britain, in an arduous contest to compel the French to leave their territory.
A report was propagated at Santa Martha, on the arrival of the late post from Santa Fe, stating, that Great Britain intended furnishing vessels for the purpose of conveying 20,000 men to Buenos Ayres, and other ports in South America, to assist in quelling the independents, and that she had also promised that she would entirely clear the seas of independent privateers.
From the neutrality all along observed by the British government in the dispute between Spain and her colonies, the incorrectness of the above report will appear evident.
The ship Louisa, captain Almeida, of 16 guns and 100 men, under the republican colors of Buenos Ayres, from the capes of Virginia, going round Cape Horn on a cruise, was spoken with on the 10th Aug. lat. 24, 36; long. 60.
