Christians or not, endeavoring or not, they are, as old John Bunyan would say, a goodly company. With hearts open to every generous impulse, and minds untrammeled by doctrinal tradition, they have met to consider how each may best bear his or her share in the responsibilities of life. Enthusiasts may perchance lead these young men and hopeful beings astray among the sloughs of fanaticism: grim philosophers and materialists may scorn them as victims of emotionalism: but the impulses that animate them are nevertheless those which, the round world over, keep humanity sound and sweet at the core, and unquestionably their society is a powerful moral force in elevating and liberalizing the communities through which its branches extend. Besides its endowment of a deeply religious spirit, the Christian Endeavor Society is strictly an American institution: and as such it is entitled to a warm welcome and a helping hand not only from the churches, but from every patriotic lover of truth and justice, whether churchman or not.
