Hartford, Conn., Jan. 15—Rev. Simon Peter Montgomery, Negro minister of Old Mystic Methodist church here, which has a white congregation, has been nominated as chaplain of the Connecticut House of Representatives at its opening session here last Wednesday.
His name was proposed by House Speaker Nelson Brown (Republican). If elected, he will be the first Negro minister to serve as chaplain of the state legislature.
Rev. Montgomery, born in South Carolina, left school at the age of 14 to help support his family. While working, he instituted a program of self-education which enabled him to later enter college and obtain a master of arts degree.
