Now that Monument Park has been transformed into a "thing of beauty" by the Monument Commission, the City Fathers of Freehold have taken the roads surrounding it in hand and will speedily make them conform to the established grade of the Park. The promptness with which the members of the Commission have been supplemented in their efforts by the Board of Commissioners to make this conveniently located triangular piece of ground presentable not only reflects credit on them but on the adjacent property owners who cheerfully consented to the changing of the grade of the streets and the tax payers who contributed indirectly to this beautiful ornamentation of Freehold. Every citizen of our town should take pride in the Monmouth Monument and Monument Park. The several Committees which our citizens selected to erect a monument have finished their work and the beautiful shaft is the result of their labors. Opinions may differ both as to the appropriateness and taste of the design. but that it possesses grace and a beautiful symmetry of outline no one but a prejudiced person will deny. All such considerations should be forgotten in the endeavor to make its surroundings as picturesque and pleasing as possible so that everything may be done to enhance the beauty of the Monument and carry out the idea of those who had charge of its construction. The government has done its duty, New Jersey has not been appealed to in vain, the people of Monmouth and our citizens have responded liberally on all occasions, and now the Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the town, have shown their interest by liberally complying with the requests of the Commission. Monument Park will be a reminder in the ages that follow of those who so unselfishly devoted their money, time and energy towards its completion.
