We are indebted to Wm. McClure, Esq., for the following extract from a private letter from J. R. McClure, Esq., in relation to the gold excitement in Kansas. He says:
"There is a great excitement in this part of Kansas about the gold discoveries on Pike's Peak. at the South Fork of the Platte. The distance from Fort Riley to the mines is about 400 miles to go directly up the river, but it is seven hundred to go the old Santa Fe road by Council Grove. I have no doubt but reports are true. Many persons have passed through here on their return and made an exhibit of the gold, they all report that gold is to be found in large quantities—as rich as the mines of California. They say that from ten to twenty dollars can be made per day. It is generally believed, and companies are forming all through the Territory, and on the borders of Missouri to go out early in the Spring. If gold should be found to exist in extensive quantities, it will enrich this part of Kansas. As here is the nearest place to procure supplies. I would not wish to induce any person to go out on my representation, for all that I know about the matter is derived from others. There is no doubt but that gold can be found but we had better wait and see if it exists in large enough quantities to pay."

A letter reports great excitement in Kansas over gold discoveries at Pike's Peak, with returning travelers exhibiting gold and claiming yields of $10-20 per day as rich as California mines. Companies form in the Territory and Missouri borders for spring expeditions, potentially enriching Kansas as the nearest supply point, though the writer advises caution based on secondhand reports.
