A Hopeful Sign

The action of California voters in repealing the old age pension constitutional amendment which threatened their state with financial ruin gives added significance to the announcement that material is being gathered for a new public welfare law in this state, to replace Initiative 172.

It is important to note that the California voters did not decree any reduction of essential assistance to those who are entitled to it. They have simply taken steps to eliminate flagrant abuses which were actually jeopardizing the aged and the infirm more than anyone else.

A similar pattern must and no doubt will be followed in any effort to correct the impossible situation created by Initiative 172.

Mr. Roderick Olzendam, director of the state department of social security, is to be commended for collecting the necessary data and making it available to any group of citizens interested in backing a new initiative.

His foresight gives those who are interested in both the financial security of the state and the welfare of the aged plenty of time to draw up a really sound law to submit to the voters a year hence.
