Full Text

Extract of a letter from Philadelphia.

It is generally believed, unless they leave New York this fall, and send considerable reinforcements to the West Indies, &c. But I doubt their leaving New York. They came into the Jerseys about ten days ago; foraging and destroying grass their intention, in which they have succeeded. They came as far as Hackinsack, near which place they surrounded Col. Baylor's detachment, and have taken twenty of his dragoons and their horses, with one officer, amongst which I am afraid is the Colonel himself, and Major Clow.

Extract of another letter from the same gentleman, of a later date.

I wrote you a few days ago, to which I refer, and am sorry to say our friend Col. Baylor and Major Clow are no more. Both are said to be dead of their wounds, and many of our men were put to death after they had surrendered.
