"STEVE" BOYLE AND CHARLES FOWLER, TWO OF THE FIVE ENGINE THIEVES, ARRESTED IN ST. LOUIS.
On the 14th day of May, it will be remembered, five prisoners seized an engine in the Sing Sing Prison enclosure, and, dashing down the track at the rate of a mile a minute, were soon far away, and, for a time at least, out of reach of the hard hand of the law. How they finally abandoned the engine about ten miles from the prison because the iron horse refused to further perform its functions, took to the woods and fields and wandered for many weary days and sleepless nights, and how one of their number, "Shang" Hamilton, was recaptured some four weeks ago in the house of his aged mother in Jane street, has all been told in the columns of the Herald and is familiar to nearly every one. And now two more of this gang of desperadoes have once more become entangled in the meshes of the law. Superintendent Walling yesterday received the following letter from the Chief of Police of St. Louis:-
St. Louis, August 5, 1875
G. W. Walling, Superintendent of Police, New York city:-
Dear Sir-Enclosed please find photographs of two men whom I arrested here on Saturday, with "safe tools" in their possession.
They are evidently "professionals," and If you or any of your men know them I will be under obligations to you if you will furnish me with any information you may obtain regarding them.
The names given by them are James Henderson and William Wright. Yours, truly
L. HANNIGAN, Chief.
The moment Superintendent Walling saw the photographs he recognized them as pictures of Charles Fowler, alias Wood, and Stephen Boyle, alias Richard Peyton, alias Edward Francis, alias Edward Barrett, two of the five escaped felons.
BOYLE ACTED AS ENGINEER
In the great race for liberty, and is as desperate and brutal a villain as ever went unhanged. He was sentenced by Recorder Hackett February 4, 1869, to twenty years in prison on confession of an assault with intent to kill. Wood was sentenced February 18 1874, for four years and six months by Recorder Hackett,
Superintendent Walling telegraphed to Chief Hannigan to hold the prisoners, and as soon as possible a requisition for them will be made out by Governor Tilden to be served on the Governor of Missouri, and they will be returned to their prison home on the banks of this noble Hudson.
