A WHIG VICTORY.
Open the session of Congress with the denunciations of the President. Resolve to "head him or die." Ascertain that he cannot and will not approve of an increased tariff of duties, coupled with distribution; and then insist that it shall be distribution or nothing—that he shall swallow that pill, or be thrown overboard. Pursue this game through an entire session of nine months, holding the country in suspense, playing with its interests and trifling with its hopes, and indulging continually in gross abuse and execration of the President, declaring that they will never yield to the "one-man power," and to Executive dictation, and that perish the tariff, perish all the great interests of the country; perish the credit, than that distribution should not be forced upon the President, and the Executive forced to accept and sanction it. Finally, at the last moment, after threats and denunciation have been exhausted in vain, finding the President inflexible and based upon impregnable ground, and not daring to encounter the responsibility of defeating a revenue tariff upon a mere question of party feeling or personal hatred of the President—abandon all these pretences—surrender distribution—concede the wantonness of a course which has trifled with and postponed the revenue bill, whilst the Treasury and all interests were suffering at every pore—and vote for the tariff and distribution.
But, lest the weak or short-sighted should not perceive at a glance all the delights and glories of your position—proclaim it with "thrills of joy!" "thanks, joyous thanks!"—and insist upon placing it among the most approved of the victories of modern Whiggery! And who will doubt it?
