Full Text

An Adroit Swindler. Last Friday afternoon a young fellow, of genteel appearance and rather bold address called at the house of Mrs. Leivac in North Moore street and asked to see the lady of the house. As soon as Mrs. L. appeared, he stated that he had just arrived from Havre, and had brought to her some letters, a roll of silk, and several small articles as presents from her husband who is at present there. The lady was very much rejoiced at the prospect of hearing from Mr. L. and expressed her eagerness to receive the letters; her visitor, stated that they were still on board, that he was about to go to the ship for them, and added that the Custom House Officers demanded $7 duty on the silks and other articles he had brought for her. He then entered into a social conversation with Mrs. L. about her children, said that the eldest very much resembled his father, &c. &c.

The lady was perfectly satisfied that all she heard was strictly true, and taking a ten dollar bill from her pocket book was about to send for change, so that she might hand him $7. He observing this, said he would take the $10 and return the change on his return with the silk. to which Mrs. L. assented.

The polite traveller retired and has taken especial care never to return since with the ten dollar bill, or the Havre presents. N. Y. Courier and Enquirer.
