RAPID PROGRESS IS BEING MADE
On Work at the New Territorial Prison Grounds at Florence.

DOUGLAS, Aug. 18.-(Special.)-

Assistant Superintendent Rollins is making rapid progress with the work now in hand at the new territorial prison grounds and thinks he will be able to complete the stockade in about two weeks after striking water in the well now being sunk by hand. More will join them and work on the permanent buildings will begin in

A sample of the posts for this stockade has been made on the ground. They are nine feet long, eight inches square at the bottom and taper to 4 inches square at the top. They are made of concrete reinforced by steel wire and have a staple set in every six inches for receiving barbed wire. The posts will be sunk two feet in a concrete foundation and will be sixteen feet apart, seven feet high and holding 14 barbed wires, making an absolutely impregnable fence. This fence will be about 20 feet from the wall and entirely surrounding it. Just outside the fence and at the four sides of the square will be erected a temporary guard tower, on which will be stationed a guard at all times. Tower No. 1 will contain a steel cage in which will be kept the arms and ammunition for the guards. These towers will be 18 feet high and the man on each will have a clear view of the entire area including all buildings, etc.

Grading and leveling was begun Thursday and the ground will soon be in shape for the foundations. Architect Fitzhugh and Contractor Grevell were here this week and say the work of building will begin at once even if they have to haul water. A car load of lumber for making moulds arrived from Phoenix this week and a much larger order has been telegraphed to Los Angeles. A gang of twenty men will be brought from Yuma the latter part of next week and as soon as the stockade is completed about 70 earnest.
