Full Text

The Second Iowa Regiment—A correspondent of the Missouri Republican writing from Cairo, says the Second Iowa Regiment is now the advance guard of the grand army of the North—at least it is further south than any other regiment from a free State, five companies being posted as pickets five miles below Fort Jefferson, on the Kentucky side. They can hear the drum beat at Columbus every morning and evening. They see Rebel scouts occasionally, and sometimes exchange shots with them.

"The 2d Iowa, through the exertions of Capt. Robert Littler, has received a full supply of United States regulation uniforms of the best quality, overcoats and all complete. It is now the best uniformed and equipped regiment in this region, and, since it has been recruited, has more men in the field than any other regiment. They went into service on the 1st of May, and were immediately ordered to Northern Missouri, where they did good service, guarding the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad until July, when they were removed to Bird's Point. Thence they were sent back to Sulphur Springs and out on the Iron Mountain Railroad. They followed Hardee to Fredericktown, whence they were ordered to Cape Girardeau. From the Cape they returned to Bird's Point, then occupied the ground where Fort Holt now is, and at present are the advanced guard at Fort Jefferson. It will be seen that they have done their share of field duty so far, and they are ready and anxious to see more active service."
