Full Text

The Temptation is strong upon us to attempt an infliction in the accepted, traditional strain of moralizing and patriotizing on the "ever glorious" anniversary which will be ushered in with the morrow's light. This temptation is all the stronger inasmuch as there is an endless variety of common-property platitudes which may be legitimately strung together in an editorial upon the Fourth of July and its memories; and the writing -or copying-of platitudes and stereotyped phrases is vastly easier this scorching weather than the cudgeling of brains necessary to the perpetration of something less hackneyed if not less original. But we forbear; not that we are much inclined to mercy toward our readers; for we have abused them so long that we have come to think that it is our right to bore or berate them ad libitum. As to the Day we celebrate, we have only to say that we are glad that the time has come at last when all Americans may claim it as the anniversary of the birth of a nation which has, after many struggles, made its Constitution and laws to conform to the long-professed principles of Liberty, Equality and Justice.

With many other matters and things, the Fourth of July has been reconstructed; and we shall burn our fire-crackers and powder in joyful celebration of that magnificent fact.
