Negotiations between the UE and the General Motors Corporation on important contract changes became deadlocked last week, and the case will be certified to the War Labor Board, at the request of James F. Dewey, U. S. Department of Labor conciliator.
The UE Negotiating Committee met with top GM officials, and plant representatives on Friday and Saturday, in Detroit, in an effort to reach agreement on the Union's demand for wage increases, a Union shop, improved vacation with pay provisions, greater protection for men in service, and a number of other important contract changes. The Corporation refused to change its position on any of the major provisions, which lead to certification to the WLB.
The UAWA-CIO negotiations also became deadlocked, and the auto worker's will also have their case heard before a special panel of the War Labor Board. Hearings are expected to start next week and may run for several weeks. The Board will then render a decision on the entire case. Meanwhile steps are being taken to negotiate an extension on the existing agreement, which expired April 28.
