Dead!—Never in the history of this country, has the word DEAD rung so constantly in our ears! It is borne on the gale—it is flashed over the telegraph—it loads down the mails—DEAD is written everywhere. The friend from whom we have parted in robust health and in good spirit, may by the next mail be announced as dead. The gallant soldiers who lie piled in heaps on the Peninsula are indeed Dead, so far as their earthly career is concerned; but no death can blot out their memory—they still live, and will live forever in the hearts of future generations as the saviors of the cause of freedom, which hung trembling in the balance. We have passed through the very throes of death, and now shall we not soon have the satisfaction of writing "secession is DEAD."
