War Preparations in Canada.—The Montreal papers of the 19th instant, contain the following intelligence. The affair has a very singular aspect, and we give all we can find, as published in one of the papers:—
[From the Montreal Herald, Dec. 19.]
War with the United States.—The following advertisement appeared in yesterday's Herald:-
'To Volunteers.—The undersigned beg to inform those men who are desirous of serving under them during the approaching war, that they will meet them at the office of Birss & Colburn, Point Calliere, on Friday evening, the 19th instant, at 8 o'clock. God save the Queen.
E. E. COLBURN,
J. HUTCHISON
December 18, 1845.'
It is signed by officers regularly appointed by Earl Cathcart, within the last few days. Comment is unnecessary. If Earl Cathcart cannot find persons of common discretion among our citizens to act as militia officers, he had better refrain altogether from making any appointments. We wish that the demi official would inform the public distinctly whether Earl Cathcart sanctions the conduct of the officers whose names we find appended to the notice to the citizens of Montreal to form themselves into volunteer corps. We doubt much whether the British government will thank these over zealous gentlemen for their headstrong conduct.
