Correction of a prior report claiming St. John's Indians attacked Fort Annapolis Royal and killed people; letters from Annapolis (Aug 5 and 13) and Halifax (Aug 5, 10, 17, 23, 25) make no mention of any assault or Indian mischief, and the Province Sloop arriving from Penobscot reports all quiet, deeming the original letter a mistake.

Full Text

In our last we inserted a Letter from Halifax, taken from the New-York Papers, mentioning, that a Number of St. John's Indians had fired on the Fort at Annapolis Royal, and killed several People thereabouts, &c. It is thought proper to inform the Public, that Mr. Hancock, of this Town, has received Letters from Gentlemen of Distinction at Annapolis, dated the 5th and 13th of August, and from Halifax of the 5th, 10th, 17th, 23d and 25th, of August, wherein there is no Mention of any such Assault made on the Fort at Annapolis, or any Mischief done by the Indians. The Province Sloop arrived here on Tuesday last, which left Penobscot the Thursday before, and the Captain says that all was quiet in those Parts; we therefore think the Contents of that Letter must be a mistake.
