LUCE CALLS FOR AN UNCOMPROMISING FIGHT ON NEGRO QUESTION

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 (ANP) -Declaring that "on the whole Negro question, we Republicans will not and must not compromise, because to do so would be to betray the principles and leadership of Abraham Lincoln, our founder," Congresswoman Clare Booth Luce's address highlighted the annual Abraham Lincoln Day banquet of the Republican club of the District of Columbia at the Statler hotel.

Pointing out, "remember the long depression years when Negroes constituted a disproportionate share of the nation's relief load," Mrs. Luce declared "it is cheaper for all that they should be working."

She maintained that "every intelligent American knows the economic drain that the ghettos of Europe places upon the economy of Europe. Our Negro ghettos--for segregation and discrimination-- are the same drain on us."

"Hard-headed Republicans know that these are the ways in which we can save money; by making it possible for the Negro to earn a decent living, by freeing him economically so that he may develop all the talents and capabilities the good Lord gave him and making it possible for him to hold any job for which those capabilities fit him."

"The personal prejudices of such men as Sen. Bilbo are not only a spiritual blot on our civilization, they are an economic drain on the purse of the whole nation."

She urged Republican support of the FEPC and an uncompromising stand against the filibuster.

Rep. Joseph Martin, minority leader of the house and Maj. Gen. Edward Martin, governor of Pennsylvania, were among the other speakers on the affair.
