The Providence Journal forcibly remarks that:
"No army has done harder fighting or better marching, none has displayed greater daring and endurance than the Army of the Potomac. But none has had such obstacles to encounter, and therefore none has so often been forced to taste the bitter cup of disappointment, and none has had its patience and persistence so fully tested. That it retains its elasticity, hopefulness and efficiency in spite of all its trials is one of the highest proofs which could be given of the intelligence, patriotism and unconquerable courage of the soldiers."
