A Washington special to the Louisville Courier-Journal says:
Supervising Architect Mullett, of the Treasury Department, has returned from Chicago. He submitted his report to-day for the information of the Secretary and President. The report takes the strongest ground in favor of retaining the federal offices in the south division, very near to, if not upon, the spot where they lately stood. Mr. Mullett, from personal observations, believes the site to be as convenient as any the government can select in any other part of the city, and that the removal would, in consequence, be a gratuitous injury to the property interests in the burned section. In this there is a concurrence of opinion between the President, Boutwell and the senators and representatives from Illinois, and Speaker Blaine, who, as the official representative in some measure of the lower house of Congress, has been using his good offices in securing indirect but substantial aid to the city through an appropriation large enough to set the United States customhouse, courts, postoffice, etc., respectively, on their feet. A special bill will be introduced early in the coming session, and, under the influence of a general sympathy and admiration for Chicago, will undoubtedly pass. With a show of liberality unusual in the committee on appropriations, assurances have been given that the new buildings shall be excelled by none owned by the government in any part of the country, in the points of convenience, style, finish and durability, and that, by complete isolation from surrounding structures, and other approved devices, they shall be perfect citadels against the assaults of fire.
