Carrots and Cabbages

The best advice we've heard in a long time came from Congressman Clair Engle (D-Calif.). He advised adventurous youth to plant carrots instead of dreaming about hunting gold. Recent statistics revealed that the California carrot crop for the year had a higher value than all the gold mined in California.

Engle's wisdom reminds us of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's reply to Maximian. Maximian had urged Diocletian, who had abdicated the throne, to return to Rome and resume the purple robes of the Caesars. Diocletian replied:

“Were you but to come to Salona and see the cabbages which I raise with my own hands you would no longer talk to me of empire.”
