Full Text
On Thursday last the British sloop of war, Earl of Moira, of sixteen guns, came to anchor opposite this village. The schooner which came down on the Saturday preceding, supposed to be the Prince Regent, proves to be the Gloucester of ten guns. They have manifested no disposition to attack us as yet, but remain probably with a view to secure the safe passage of their boats up and down the river: also to prevent the departure of the vessels from this port.
We are informed that major general Van Rensselaer intends staying some time in this village. He has been assiduously employed since his arrival, in preparing for our defence. A battery has been erected, which with a few guns commands the entrance of the harbor; also a breast work sufficient to cover a large body of men. In addition to which, there are on the way, and expected daily, several pieces of heavy artillery. We are constantly receiving reinforcements of troops, and supplies of arms and ammunition. The rapid improvement made by the troops in discipline, and their orderly deportment in general, reflect the highest honor on lieut. col. Benedict and his officers.
