On Friday, October 20, the Morehouse College Marching Band known as "The Fabulous 70" will journey to Columbus, Georgia, to take part in the annual Morehouse-Tuskegee classic.
The band this year is under the direction of Donal Blackwell, a student from Atlanta, and drum major Benjamin Berry, a senior from Washington, D. C. Mr. Albert T. Perkins, a graduate of Morehouse College, is serving his alma mater as instructor in music and is supervisor of the band.
Famous for its fast cadences and high stepping, the band will participate in the annual parade and the pre-game and halftime shows while in Columbus. At halftime, a tribute will be played to the jazz-blues singer Ray Charles.
Such numbers as Hit the Road, Jack, Georgia on My Mind, One Mint Julep, and possibly, What I Say, are scheduled.
This year the band consists of a very strong saxophone section which will be featured as soloist in many numbers. The saxophone section numbers 15, including 4 tenor, 2 baritone and 9 alto. The rest of the band includes 18 clarinets, 1 piccolo, 15 trumpets, 2 baritones, 6 trombones, 3 basses, and 12 percussionists.
