THE MOUNTED INDIANS came skimming back to the Rocky Mountain Fur Co. pack train in the afternoon, signaling that they'd spotted a heap of white men. Little Foolish Bear made the signs for three hundred horses. "Much dust. One sleep away." He had overestimated the size of the pack train. Mordecai Price knew. but it couldn't be anybody but the American Fur Co. outfit. Big Nose Yenzer and Mordecai looked at each other. They couldn't go one step faster than they were going at the moment. In fact. they both knew they couldn't even hope to keep up their present speed. They watched their own pack train moving past. The rest had benefited some of the original animals, but it hadn't been enough rest. Mules with backs rubbed raw when they were badly over- loaded on the Platte trail were trying to hold back now. Some of the lame ones weren't going to last two davs more. Some of the packers slogging by, a few of them nigh barefooted. looked re- sentfully at the mounted Indians. "Go back." Mordecai told Bea- ver Tails and the other Snakes Watch. See if they come faster." The Indians had nothing better to do. It was interesting work, without risk, and they were get- ting paid for it. They went away happy enough. "Know any short cuts?" Big Nose asked Mordecal shook his head. They were raising camp when the Snakes came in to report three men coming on from the American pack train. Emil Fred- erick. the clerk. was one of them. Grim as an insulted Crow, he was, with dust thickly overlaying the burned redness of his features. He came rding in like he meant business. instead of just coming on a pretended visit to gloat over the condition of Roc'ky Mountain's outfit. He alwavs rode with a tomahawk tied at his saddle horn and it was said he could throw it better nor he could shoot a rfle at close range. "Where's Jim Shandy?" he demanded, "Ie ain't with us." Big Nose said "What d'you want ? Frederck looked around the camp. He took an insulting long time in answering. "Three horses Shandy stole 'em " "Ie ain't with us." Mordecai said. "His two men ain't with us any longer, either. Have we got any of Frederick's horses, Big Nose?" "Maybe one. You can have it back at the rendezvous, Freder. ick" "I sce that one." Homer Avcock, 26. plead guilty to shooting a man identified as Willie Armour. 30, 111 Scott St., N.W.. after allegedly failing to pay his share of a liquor bill incurred by a party of people he had been drinking with. Armour. who is commander of the veterans post where the inci- dent occurred and also a deputy sheriff for Fulton County. was shot at a very critical point when he followed the sentenced man out- side the club and reminded the al- leged assailant that his presence at the club was no longer welcomed if he failed to pay his share of the bill, police said.
