The moral and social condition of society from being disturbed by Democratic ballots. Such indeed would be against the spirit of liberty and our republican institutions.

How long before North Carolina Radicals? Has mixed schools and social equality been defeated in this State by last August's election, or only postponed? The people must decide. Renewed Radical victory may bring into prominence the social relations between the members of the party, and the incidents of the ball at Janney's Hall, in Columbia, may be re-enacted at the City Hall, in Wilmington.

We doubtless have our "Alderman Minott," who waltzes well and who clasps firmly, undulating softly like a ground swell on the beach.

Reconstruction and Ku Klux!

The New York Evening Post, (Radical,) in speaking of Shellabarger's Ku-Klux bill, which has passed both Houses of Congress, says: "Those parts of it which are new are directly at variance with the Constitution, and with the fundamental theory of our government."

Vice President Colfax recently published in the Independent a statement to the effect that Russian influence alone prevented the recognition of the Southern Confederacy during the war. This was promptly contradicted in Harper's Weekly, on what was represented to be adequate authority, and Lord Granville subsequently denied it in the House of Lords. He went so far as to say that as a member of the Palmerston and Russell Cabinet, he could say that a proposition to recognize the South was never even entertained.

The Washington Patriot says: "Since the adoption of the rule by the Committee on Elections to recommend the payment of no money to contestants who do not have a reasonable ground of contest, and in no case beyond actual expenses to unsuccessful contestants, several Radical claimants to seats have withdrawn their papers, and decline further prosecuting their claims. One contestant, who was beaten by his Democratic competitor over six thousand votes, has given up the contest, declaring the Committee on Elections 'too conservative' for him to hope for success."
