SEMLIN, March 10.

The 7th instant, the day on which a detachment from the garrison of Belgrade surprised our workmen employed at the Dyke, near that place, a body of about 900 Turks at the same time, made an attempt on the town of Panczoua, but with far different success; for the garrison being informed of their approach, had time to make the necessary dispositions to receive them properly. All the avenues leading to the town were occupied by our soldiers, and furnished with cannon, loaded with cartridges; another troop was placed in ambuscade without the city, to set adrift the enemy's boats, and thus to cut off their retreat; whilst another division was posted so as to attack the Turks in the rear, as soon as they had reached the gates of the place, which were left open to tempt them.
The dispositions were scarcely made, when about eleven o'clock in the morning the enemy arrived, and ran with a noise and confusion to the gate of the town, thinking the place abandoned. But what was their surprise to find our artillery playing upon them from all sides, and attacked behind by the detachment which followed close after them, and which, taking advantage of their first surprise, drove them on with bayonets fixed, giving them as they advanced the contents of our cannon; so that the carnage was complete, none of those who entered the city escaping, and the rest being drowned in the river.
