TRAFFIC DEATH RECORD
STANDS AGAINST COUNTY
Imperial County has a record this year on traffic deaths that gives the community a black mark. With Sunday's tragedy on Highway 80, when four persons were killed, the county stands close to the top in the state. The total for the year has reached 34, and is above last year at this time.
For the rest of the year, unless extreme care and caution mark driving, we shall have an even worse record. With the old limit of speed restored and with many cars and trucks running on shaky tires, and with the mechanical condition of many vehicles below par, the danger of accidents is increased tremendously. To make up for this new hazard there must be a determination on the part of all drivers to observe all rules of traffic.
Traffic officials, state, county and municipal, have been warning against the time of the return of faster driving and emphasizing the poor mechanical condition of vehicles. Manifestly there is no way of policing the highways to see that all rules are obeyed. Whether we get through the next few months without accidents depends almost entirely upon the good sense of the drivers.
