Full Text

Or The Nantucket Inquirer.—The worthy Editor of the Nantucket Inquirer will please to accept our "compliments," whilst we assure him, that we are happy to find that he is not "out for the Presidency," and is not inclined to enlist his forces in favor of Gen. Andrew Jackson. It is pleasant to say to him, that we are happy to find that he is willing to acknowledge, that he is an admirer of the talents, eloquence and independence of Mr. Secretary Clay, and in return for this honest confession, we offer to him the hand of friendship.

It would rejoice us "right heartily" to find friend Jenks openly advocating the administration, and since he has made his confession, not to a "father confessor," but to the public, we think that the "day and hour" is not far distant when the gentleman of the Island of Oil and Spermaceti Candles, will freely admit that the Secretary of State is not entitled to eternal condemnation, for having been compelled to a personal altercation with John Randolph of Roanoke. We are far from being the advocates of personal combat; but if ever a man was justly provoked to one, that man is Henry Clay. Concede this to us Mr. Nantucket Inquirer, and we are satisfied.
