Full Text

K. N. POLITICIANS.—The New York Herald contains the following in reference to the defeat of Gen. Sam Houston in Texas.—It presents an interesting but unfortunate group:

"About the most conspicuous of all the wrecks stranded among the shoals and the breakers of Know Nothingism, is that stalwart man of war, Sam Houston. Like Millard Fillmore, Gustavus Adolphus Seggogs, Andrew J. Donelson, John J. Crittenden, J. M. Botts, Commodore Stockton, Geo. Law and a whole army of others, desperate politicians of both the old whig and democratic parties, Old San Jacinto was deluded and caught by the first astonishing flare-up of the mysterious and terrible party of the dark lantern. But the dark lantern was a will-o' the-wisp, and has led its honest followers on their route to the spoils and plunder of the government.—

Away to the lake of the dismal swamp, and the ex-President of Texas is as fast in the quagmire as the Buffalo ex-President of the United States. But the know nothing movement in thus killing off its extensive catalogue of Presidential aspirants and political hucksters, has done some service to the country. We may regret the fate of General Houston, but he must submit to the fortune of war. His late crushing defeat as the late know nothing candidate for Governor of Texas, removes a prominent figure from the political arena, but it adds another to that interesting retired list of distinguished politicians restored to the sweets of private life."
